I heard my calling to become a doctor at a very early age when, as a young boy, I watched an interview with Christiaan Barnard, the first surgeon to perform a heart transplant. From that moment onwards, I developed a keen interest in the human body and how to care for it. Enrolling in the Medical School in Messina was the most logical next step to take. I am grateful to Professor Puccio Anastasi, whom I consider my mentor, for inspiring me to specialise in neurosurgery. His almost poetic approach to neuroanatomy greatly influenced my decision. I have always considered the surgeon, in his own way, to be a craftsman who works with humanity, vision, wisdom, planning, and a great deal of experience. Throughout my constantly evolving training, I have had the privilege to witness a period of stunning innovation in neurosurgery and medicine as a whole. This has fuelled my passion for technology applied to neurosurgery and driven me to study, learn, and practice robotic spine surgery. Today, I am the Co-Director of the first Centre for Spinal Surgery and Robotics at Humanitas San Pio X Hospital in Milan.
Neurosurgery is an art; pursuing it was my calling.
