My name is Giuseppe J. Sciarrone, I am a neurosurgeon with years of experience in treating spinal disorders. With over 20 years of experience, I have encountered and treated a myriad of neurological conditions affecting the brain and spine. I have successfully performed over 10,000 surgeries throughout my career. I was appointed as co-director of the Centre for Spinal Surgery and Robotics at Humanitas San Pio X Hospital in Milan. This hospital is one of ten in Italy and the first in Lombardy to offer robotic technology for spinal surgeries. I use the same technology for performing surgery at Casa di Cura Rizzola in San Donà di Piave, and perform minimally invasive surgery at Casa di Cura Pierangeli in Pescara.
The conditions I address
My specialty lies in treating all disorders that impact neurosurgery, encompassing both the central and peripheral nervous systems. In particular, I deal with all spinal conditions and disorders. The significant advancements in minimally invasive surgery, particularly robot applications in spinal procedures over the past decade, have fueled my enthusiasm for the potential of cutting-edge technologies in surgical settings.
It is becoming more apparent that advances in technology allow us to effectively treat a larger range of spinal disorders, year after year. Specifically, the list below includes the conditions, which in their most severe forms require the use of synthetic materials for spinal stabilization, that I most commonly treat, preferably aided by robotics.
The principles of modern spinal surgery
Precision and safety
Technology has become an essential and fundamental component in operating rooms. Starting out as a conventional surgeon, I was lucky enough to witness the dawn of technological advancements. This allowed me to not only deeply understand the new technologies but also implement them in my practice. Technology offers us an exponential increase in precision and accuracy, crucial in all surgeries and particularly imperative in spinal procedures.
Additionally, it helps minimise any potential complications during surgery, allowing the patient to promptly begin post-operative care and experience a smoother recovery process.
Reducing trauma
The goal of medical care has always been to treat patients without resorting to invasive surgery: a dream turned into reality in the past few decades. The miniaturisation of endoscopic and surgical instruments has enabled a significant reduction in surgical trauma, leading to decreased pain, faster surgical procedures, and minimised risks. Patients experience a quicker recovery in functionality thanks to a shorter post-operative care. The numerous benefits are easily noticeable.
The minimally invasive approach has become the cornerstone in modern surgery, including spine surgery. Recent advancements have elevated minimally invasive surgery to the gold standard for all surgical procedures.
